Important History on Ezekoro Stream: the wonder tourism center
According to the 18th October 2019 report by Nweke Ifeanyi Green: “Revitalizing Ezekoro Stream Achina Nigeria Wonder Tourism Site,” page 2 – 4:
“History with live evidences proved that the ‘American Peace Corps’ with the efforts of our people and Government created steps from the top of the road side (Ezekoro Stream Entrance) down to the water harvesting source of the Ezekoro Stream; as far back as before independence; for easy access to the resourceful Ezekoro Stream Achina.”
“Ezekoro Forest and Stream is as old as Achina Town; and have over 11 centuries ago, accommodated wild life’s around it’s thick forest called”Ọhịa Ezekoro.” No doubt that Lions, Tigers and other wild animals existed in the Ezekoro Forest; that it got the name “Abanwa-Agu,” stretching up to Akpo and the today St. Peter School Achina.
The forest reserve at Ezekoro Forest housing the resourceful Ezekoro Stream has great international tourism potentials for modern development.
“Before Ezekoro steps was constructed, the people of Achina and neighbouring communities found it difficult to harvest water from the Ezekoro Stream; which one has to fetch using track routes full of mould.”
Chief Don Chuks Nwosu (Obidigbo, Ezeoba).
According to Chief Obidigbo, who narrated that this opportunity came when he was in active service. The Divisional Officer (DO), in Awka, Division in the 1950s; precisely 1956, Mr. Chike Okoyia, native of Ogbaru, informed him that some students on Youth Service “American Peace Corps” from the American University are coming down for community development with the movement: “Operation Cross Road Africa.”
The Divisional Officer in charge of Awka Division accepted directing the American Youth Coppers to Achina after wide consultation for community development service.
Chief Obidigbo came back to Achina and broke the news to the Achina People; through the Achina Patriotic Union (APU) leadership in the time of Chief B. O Ezenwa who was the then Chairman of APU, while Rev. E. A Akunne was Secretary of the then APU.
Happily, the Achina people accepted constructing steps down to Iyi-Umunwanyi in Ezekoro Stream as a community project. And also consulted the Umuada Achina (Women wing), that also nodded to it as a welcome development.
Achina people were able to cut down Trees from the top of Ezekoro entrance down to the women section of the Ezekoro stream; and uprooted the tree trunks from the roots and made way for the steps to be constructed.
The D O of Awka Division included the Ezekoro Stream Step Project into the Anambra State Government budget; and was able to provide all the cement used for the project. While the Achina men were busy cracking stones at Ugwunganga, with the Umuada Achina assisting in bringing the cracked stones to the site for the steps to be created.
Some professional mesons from different villages in Achina, the likes of Mr. Charles Ọnuma, etc, were assisting in fixing the steps wherever the American Students needed their assistance.
Mr Christopher Uduji, Levi Ezeani, etc were some notable Achina citizens that played part too.
In all, the American Peace Corp team “Operation Cross Road Africa” were in Achina at Abanwagu for 2 Months plus, and constructed 276 steps; for water harvesters to access the Ezekoro Stream in Achina.”
