Onyendu John-Greg Okey Ezebuadi and the Association of Ndindu Ndigbo Nauzoije Lagos State
A central figure in the proceedings was Onyendu John-Greg Okey Ezebuadi, Ogboroagha Ezeani Ugwudike Ichida, Chairman Association of Ndindu Ndigbo Nauzoije Lagos State.
His leadership role was particularly significant in the context of the event’s focus on the identity and recognition of Igbo traditional leaders in the diaspora.
The welcome address, delivered by Onyendu Ndigbo Nauzoije John-Greg Okey Ezebuadi, addressed the controversies surrounding the use of the title “Eze Ndigbo” outside Igbo land and the need for a culturally acceptable framework for identifying diaspora traditional leaders.
According to the address, the issue had become a source of contestation, misinterpretation, and, at times, open conflict. It had also contributed to divisions among Igbo people in the diaspora and a disconnect between diaspora leaders and ancestral authorities at home.
The address explained that a unanimous agreement was reached that the appropriate and culturally acceptable nomenclature for Igbo traditional leaders in the diaspora should be ONYENDU NDIGBO, distinguishing them from hereditary Royal Fathers whose thrones are domiciled in Igbo land.
The full details of the welcome address are contained on pages 32–34 of the event brochure.
The Evolution from Eze Ndigbo to Onyendu Ndigbo
One of the most important themes highlighted by the event was the evolution of the nomenclature used for Igbo traditional leadership in the diaspora.
The issue of the “Eze Ndigbo” title outside Igbo land has, over the years, raised questions about cultural identity, traditional authority, and the relationship between diaspora community leaders and established traditional institutions in Igboland.
The discussions presented at the event emphasized the adoption of Onyendu Ndigbo as the appropriate designation for Igbo traditional leaders in the diaspora, distinguishing their roles from those of hereditary traditional rulers whose ancestral thrones are located in Igbo land.
The event brochure also contains two important historical accounts that provide additional context for understanding this development.
A Brief History of Eze Ndigbo in Lagos and the Evolution to Onyendu Ndigbo
This account was captured by Onyendu Uche Ijioma Dimgba on pages 38–39 of the event brochure.
It provides historical context for the development of Igbo traditional leadership in Lagos and the evolution of the terminology associated with diaspora leadership.
Turning Point in Igbo Solidarity in the Diaspora
Another significant account, titled “Turning Point in Igbo Solidarity in the Diaspora,” documents the role of Onyendu John-Greg Okey Ezebuadi, tracing the journey from Ohanaeze Ndigbo to Eze Ndigbo and ultimately to Onyendu Ndigbo.
The account is captured on pages 40–41 of the event brochure.
Together, these documented accounts form an important part of the historical narrative surrounding the evolution of Igbo diaspora leadership and the search for a designation intended to reflect cultural identity and the distinction between diaspora leadership and hereditary traditional authority at home.
